Abstract

Community or social groups in schools are one way for adolescents to find their identity in the school environment. This study aims to uncover and understand the motives that drive adolescents to choose to join a community at school. The study used a qualitative approach with an in-depth interview method with three student members of the community representing grades 10, 11, and 12. The results showed that the main motives for adolescents to join the community were the need for a sense of belonging, search for identity, the influence of seniors and traditions, and the need for emotional support. The community functions as a place to fulfill social-emotional needs and a coping mechanism in dealing with academic and social pressures. This study provides important implications for schools and counselors in developing student development programs that accommodate adolescents' needs for a positive community.
