Artikel ini mengkaji inovasi pengelolaan limbah berkelanjutan di laboratorium peternakan beserta tantangan dan peluangnya di era modern. Analisis menunjukkan bahwa operasional laboratorium berisiko tinggi (seperti fasilitas BSL-3Ag/4Ag) menimbulkan dampak lingkungan signifikan, termasuk potensi pencemaran agen zoonosis (Campylobacter, Salmonella), emisi gas rumah kaca, dan konsumsi sumber daya intensif. Tantangan utama meliputi hambatan teknologi, ekonomi, serta kerumitan kepatuhan regulasi. Di sisi lain, inovasi teknologi seperti penerapan AI, IoT, blockchain, dan daur ulang kimia terbukti meningkatkan efisiensi pemilahan limbah, transparansi pelacakan, serta pengolahan aliran limbah kompleks. Pendekatan ekonomi sirkular melalui pemanfaatan produk sampingan (biogas, kompos) dan strategi pengolahan on-site berpotensi menciptakan aliran pendapatan baru serta mengurangi biaya operasional. Kesuksesan implementasi memerlukan kerangka regulasi ketat (IACUC), pelatihan staf berkelanjutan, dan harmonisasi praktik manajemen risiko untuk menjamin keberlanjutan lingkungan, keuntungan ekonomi, serta kepatuhan standar keselamatan.
